Starcity is the largest coliving company on the West Coast, and we're growing! We build and operate furnished residential communities that make moving to the heart of the city easy. It's our mission to make great cities accessible while being the neighbor you can count on.

We're looking for experienced and innovative landlord counsel to help us maintain the trust and safety of our communities. At Starcity, our legal team serves as defenders of our communities so each member knows they are being treated fairly and in accordance with the law. The legal team only gets involved in member issues when other attempts to mediate a resolution have failed. We are often involved when members are having significant financial, emotional, or other crises that require intervention, and a deft approach to balancing the community need and member experience is required at all times.

Responsibilities
  • Protect our communities by successfully negotiating and litigating the departure of members that negatively impact the experience of other members
  • Constantly improve our Membership Agreements to properly protect our communities and owners
  • Collaborate with our Accounting and Community teams to structure and enforce payment plans and early terminations for members going through financial hardships
  • Work with collections agencies and credit bureaus when all else has failed
  • Act as a stakeholder for our Engineering team to help design systems that are in compliance with relevant regulations and properly align with the Membership Agreements
  • Provide systems-level ingenuity to help our Community Directors process requests more efficiently
  • Coach our Community team members on the do's and don'ts of housing law
Requirements
  • Licensed to practice law in California
  • 3-5 years of experience working in CA housing law for a firm, agency or relevant in-house experience
  • Clear grasp of landlord rights and obligations under CA law, rent stabilization ordinances in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and/or Alameda counties, as well as FHA and DFEH regulations
  • Significant experience in lease drafting and compliance enforcement
  • Understanding of proper uses in local zoning codes and business implications for our processes
  • Ability to creatively and succinctly draft and amend Membership Agreements
  • High emotional intelligence and ability to empathetically and accurately discern claims of hardship

Bonus Experience Points
  • Litigating unlawful detainer actions and successfully collecting on judgments
  • Commercial lease negotiation and drafting
  • Other real estate transaction related experience
  • Experience with G Suite, Asana, Zendesk and other company-utilized systems

The position is a full-time, salaried role with medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits. We hope to have the right candidate join us as early as July 2020. This role may begin as a remote role, with the possibility of basing out of either our San Francisco or Los Angeles locations.

Starcity is an equal opportunity housing provider and employer, and acts in these capacities without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, or disability.
